Why Abara

We foster connection, healing, and action at the U.S.-Mexico border by creating spaces where stories are honored, divisions are bridged, and people are equipped to pursue peace and justice across borders.

A Different Kind of Border Work

While the U.S.-Mexico border is often viewed through the lens of politics and crisis, we offer something different: a place of connection, learning, and transformation. We create spaces—physical and relational—where the dignity of every person is honored, stories are heard, and new paths forward are imagined.

Why Now

Global migration is increasing. Political rhetoric is hardening. The need for understanding and compassion has never been greater. At this critical crossroads, we exist to bridge divides and help individuals and communities respond with wisdom, courage, and care.

Why Here

Our home is the El Paso–Juárez borderlands—the largest bilingual, binational community in the Western Hemisphere. This is a place shaped by centuries of migration, culture, and resilience. Our work happens just a few feet from the border fence, in a region where global realities and human stories intersect every day.

Why Abara?

We live here. We are part of the community and work in relationship with migrant shelters, leaders, and neighbors on both sides of the border.

We’re building for the long haul. Through Abara House, we are restoring one of the most historic sites on the border as a permanent center for peacebuilding.

We invite reflection and action. Our programs help people move beyond headlines—toward deeper empathy and lasting impact.

We center dignity. Every encounter is shaped by listening, learning, and honoring the full humanity of each person.

The Vision

We are catalyzing a movement of peacemakers who see beyond borders, engage across divides, and commit to the flourishing of all.
