Daniel Banda

Juarez Shelter Connector

Daniel Banda is originally from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. He had the opportunity to work with the United Nations at the International Organization for Migration for 2 years, which was his introduction to the humanitarian field. His experiences in the humanitarian space have been significant for him, as they’ve allowed him to learn about the complex lives of people on the move, and how their journeys can be dignified. Daniel shares, “I hope to continue contributing my grain of sand, and thus humanize people on the move who live, or are passing through, in this city.”

Living on the border and witnessing border dynamics between the two countries the majority of his life, helps Daniel to understand that migrants dream of finding a better quality of life for them and for their families. Connecting with the shelter guests is gratifying for him–through peace and compassion, Daniel prefers to work little by little to change the unjust narrative against migrants.

A few of Daniel’s focuses at Abara are shelter volunteer training, English classes, and a computer lab. When shelter volunteers are equipped, they are able to grow personally and professionally. Daniel enjoys connecting the two cities, two countries, and many individual lives.

In his free time, Daniel enjoys supporting different projects around Ciudad Juárez alongside his wife.  Through their church, Daniel and Caro support people with substance addiction, hospitalized children, and someday soon, women in prison. Daniel plays guitar, sings, and leads worship, even teaching music to others. “Thankfully, because of the service I get to do at Abara and at my church, I can show my children the love of God and service to my community,” he shares.
